I Want YOU to Crochet a Granny Square to Celebrate the Human Race

“Blanket Statement: My Race is Human”

A gigantic Granny Square blanket as a symbol of diversity, inclusion, and unity.

Made by… YOU!  And me.  And all of US!

One Granny Square at a time—to demonstrate that We the People of the United States do not discriminate against any human based on skin color, ethnicity, religion, creed, gender, sexual orientation, or national origin.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the yarn-loving universe, please take up your crochet hooks and join me in sending a message to all people around the globe.  Let’s make it a BIG, SOFT, COMFY MESSAGE OF LOVE for all humanity—a blanket assembled of a gazillion granny squares—each with a border in any one of the many natural human skin tones.

Here is what I would like you to do:

1. Crochet ONE GRANNY SQUARE 6 x 6 inches in any yarn of your choosing.

2. The border color must be black, or white, or cream, or tan, or brown–any shade of brown!

3. The colors in the center can be anything you want.  Express yourself!

4. Send the square to my PO Box (Details below), in an envelope with a tracking number.

5. Have fun receiving project updates and watching our Blanket Statement GROW!

Send your square within the next 90 days–by November 28th, 2017–the Tuesday after Thanksgiving!  EXTENDED DEADLINE!!!  The momentum was slow to catch but catch it has, and you now have until January 10th 2018.  So get those holiday projects wrapped, spread love and  joy, and you can pop your square in the mail by the second week of the new year!

(if you don’t know how to crochet, see links below)

I will assemble however many squares I get into a giant quilt and send it out to be displayed in public venues around the United States for the world to see.

Details:  Your square must be 6×6” to fit easily with all the others.  Your square must have a border in one of the colors listed in item #2 or it will not be included in the final blanket.  Your square must be mailed in an envelope – not a box – and must have a tracking number or I will not open it.  This is a safety measure.  Also, I will never display your name or address publicly.  I will, however, display a list of each square’s city and state.

Send to: Kathleen King, PO Box 2906, Oceanside CA, 92051

If you are a seasoned crocheter feel free to interpret the Granny as you please.  If you do not know how to crochet this is your chance to learn something new!  It’s super easy!  Please see these webpages and youtube videos for simple instructions for a basic Granny:

As an artist, I always get annoyed when people are categorized as “black” or “white” because human skin isn’t ever really either—we all fall somewhere on the wide spectrum from palest cream to darkest brown.  While it may seem contradictory, I am including pure black and pure white here as creative options as many people include these terms as part of their identity, and, to drive the point home as these labels are popular flash points in the public discourse concerning “race”.

Whenever there is a form I need to fill out with a box I’m supposed to check for “race” I check “other” and write in “human”—because skin tone, or ethnicity, or national origin is not a race.

Let’s throw a blanket on the fires of hate and extinguish the ignorance that threatens to divide us.

Thank you so much.  This is going to be fun!

    • Hi Lynn. Thank you for asking. When you go to ship the package at the post office you will need to request a tracking number. If you ship via UPS or Fed-ex a tracking number comes with the service automatically. The US postal service is still usually the least expensive option.

      • Hi Christina. Thank you for asking. When you go to the post office to mail the envelope you will need to ask them for a tracking number and it will put on the envelope. If you ship via UPS or Fedex the tracking service is included automatically.

      • Kathleen, I mailed you a square from our Northport, WA post office box today (we actually live in BC, Canada). I had to choose between mailing it first class without tracking for 98 cents or priority with tracking for $8.05. Needless to say, I wasn’t going to spend $8 for a tracking number. Please be on the lookout for my block as I am eager to participate in your project.

  1. Hi Christina. No, you don’t have to send me the number. The number on the package let’s me know that the package origin can be verified if necessary.

    • Hi Heartshapedpieces. I’m so sorry I haven’t replied! This got lost in the reader. Just found it. You can use ANY granny square pattern you like. Those vids are for those who are new to crochet. Looking forward to your creation!

  2. Hi Kathleen,
In the perfect world what gage or crochet hook size would be optimal to obtain 6×6?
I am going to make you a square representing the beautiful tones of my daughter’s friend group.
Thank you for doing this project!

    • Hi Dee Dee. Most 6 inch squares are done with a G or H hook using worsted weight yarn. Thank you so much! I am looking forward to seeing your creation!

    • Absolutely! Freckles are glorious. I have a lot of them too. If you have yarn that looks like freckles I’m sure we are all looking forward to seeing it! Thank you, Raquel.

  3. I Would like to do a square for each each member of my house hold. Would that be permitted. Actually I would love to do one for each of my grand and great grand children, but that is asking a lot of me. But we have 5 in this house hold if that would be acceptable. Thanks Betty

    • You most certainly may! As long as each square represents an individual who wishes to be included, feel free to ‘ghost crochet’ for them! Please do include the name of the person with each square. Thank you, Betty!

      • Well I better get busy, I have 11 grand children. Thank you, this is such a wonderful idea. We really are neighbors, well almost. We are in Scotia, close to Estill. Thanks again. Betty

  4. I don’t like to assume anything so I will ask. I know the center can be any color we choose, but do you accept any granny square we choose or only the traditional granny square? Thanks AGAIN Betty

    • No problem, Betty! I don’t mind the questions. Yes, if you know how to the do the fancy stuff, 3d flourishes and all, do your joy!
